Introduction

When was the last time you felt like you had too much to do at one time? Do you ever feel like you are on a roller coaster racing from chore to chore? Are you always juggling work responsibilities, household responsibilities, and family responsibilities? If you feel like this fairly often, you are not alone. Many of us feel like we need to be in several places and doing several things at one time.

Everyone has the same number of hours in the day. Why, then, are some people able to get more done in a day? How come some people seem to be able to make better use of their time? These people have effective time management skills. These skills will really help you to organize your day better. You will enjoy your work more and feel less stressed. This module will help you to get off that roller coaster by helping you to manage your time more effectively!

IS TIME MANAGEMENT REALLY IMPORTANT?

There are several myths about using time. These include:

  • There's too much to do. Good time management skills will help you to organize your tasks so you can get as much as done as possible.

  • I can do it later. Usually, you will have other tasks to do "later."

  • It's only a small task so it's not important enough to do now (Woodgold, n.d.). Some small tasks can be very important and need to be done right away.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT?
Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow.

Helen Keller

Time is considered to be a cheap product that can be wasted. However, it is actually a valuable resource. Feeling that you do not have enough time to complete your tasks can lead to feelings of stress. It can also lead to an increased possibility of errors. It can lead to important tasks being forgotten or omitted (Marquis & Huston, 2000). A healthcare worker who is constantly rushing may seem uncaring to a client. The client may feel neglected, even if all necessary tasks have been completed (Ellis, 2000).
