Course Sample:
Dementia
Over 4 million Americans are afflicted with dementia with direct costs of $100 billion dollars a year and indirect costs of an additional $100 billion. Moreover, these numbers are expected to double over the next 40 years (Ernst & Hay, 1994). Accurate and early diagnosis can lead to better management and improvement in overall quality of life.
Although there are several different types of dementia, all share three essential characteristics (Kennedy, 2000).
- There is a progressive decline in cognitive functioning with dementia. In contrast, developmental disorders can begin in childhood and then stabilize in adulthood.
- Patients with dementia often have learning and memory problems and an additional deficit with either impairments in communication, reasoning, orientation or modulation of mood.
- In the early and middle phases of dementia, impairments in consciousness are not evident. In contrast, patients suffering from delirium will display a waxing and waning of consciousness.
Types of Dementia
The majority of dementia disorders are of three types: Alzheimer's disease, Vascular and Lewy body disease.
