Glossary of Terms:

Acetylcholine- --A substance in the body that helps transmit messages from one nerve to another.

Autonomic- --As it relates to the nervous system, this is a part of the system that controls involuntary body functions, regulating the behavior of areas such as smooth muscle tissue.

Bronchiolitis- --Typically caused by a viral infection of the lower respiratory tract with symptoms similar to asthma. Typically seen in infants younger than 18 months.

Epithelial- --Relates to or composed of the epithelium, the layer of cells that covers the organs of the body.

Hyperreactivity- --An increased response to stimuli.

Mentation--Mental activity.

Metered-Dose Inhaler- --A handheld aerosol device that delivers a fixed amount of drug per spray.

Nebulization- --A method of delivering an inhaled drug by vaporization.

Paradoxical Pulse- --A pulse that is more or less suppressed at the end of each full inspiration.

Reserve--A general term used to describe a patient's energy stores--including glucose, glycogen and muscle mass--used to maintain respiratory rate and the amount of fluid available in the body to counteract dehydration.
