The chain of infection includes the following links: the infectious agent, the reservoir, the portal of exit, the mechanism for transmission, the portal of entry, and the susceptible host. All links must be present for an infection to spread. - The infectious agent, or pathogen, is a disease-producing microorganism, such as a virus or a bacterium.
- The reservoir is the place or person where the pathogen lives and multiplies.
- The portal of exit is the route by which the pathogen leaves the reservoir.
