Introduction

The term nocturia refers to excessive urination that occurs during the night. This may be the result of over stimulation of the nerves and muscles that control the bladder and the urination process. In the normal individual, there is a greater concentration of urine during the night than during the day. This means that most persons urinat 3 to 4 times more during the day than during the night, and can sleep 6 to 8 hours without having to be awakened by the urge to urinate. Individuals with nocturia, however, may awaken one or more times during the night to empty their bladder and will excrete 700ml or more of urine.

Nocturia usually is due to renal and lower urinary tract disorders. It may, however, also result from cardiovascular, endocrine, and metabolic disorders. Nocturia is a common side effect of many drugs also, including the diuretics. It can also result from ingestion of large amounts of fluids in the evening, particularly caffeinated beverages and alcohol. A good nursing assessment is the first key step in determining the cause of nocturia, and choosing an appropriate treatment.
