I find that the liquid cons downgrades (thickened
liquids) are exacerbating the constipation issues which are the norm with the non-ambulatory population receiving numerous medications. Thickened water is unpalatable. Thickened C/T is not well accepted. We are left with juices and diet drinks. Sodas do not thicken well either. Then speech pathologists, as you noted in your draft, don't want ice cream or sherbets, an OK substitute for fluids, unless it is served hard and cold and not liquidy (ie. unthickened liquid) We are in a catch 22; prevent aspiration pneumonia but cause constipation, dehydration and impactions.
